When I am hangry I have a snake

This book should appeal to anyone who wishes to be amused and entertained. It may be of particular interest to anybody who is interested in languages – whether as a teacher, a learner – or just as a lover of the fascination of the spoken word.

The book is a comical account of the life of a teacher of English as a foreign language. All the events, all the eccentric characters and above all, their linguistic gaffes are condensed into this eminently readable little book. It has to be among the nicest accounts of the pains and pleasures of teaching – or learning – a foreign language that has ever been compiled.

The Vendetta Tree

A Commissario Beppe Stancato novel (5)

The discovery of a man’s body hanging from an ancient olive tree outside the little town of Picciano, in Abruzzo, is dismissed by the local police as a simple case of suicide, not worth investigating. An anonymous caller from Picciano to the Questura in Pescara hints at a far more sinister explanation. Beppe and two of his colleagues take one look at this solitary olive tree outside the town and come to the conclusion that a murder has been committed. A post-mortem confirms a mafia-style killing.
It does not take long for the reticence of the town-dwellers to crack – revealing an illegal take-over by the Calabrian mafia – controlling the production and bottling of the town’s precious olive oil.
Beppe and his team are up against ‘The Smiling Man’ – a ruthless member of a clan which hails from Beppe’s home town in Calabria. His own parents and his sister’s family living in Catanzaro are at risk of reprisals from the mob. A host of diverse characters become involved in the investigation. But the final breakthrough comes from an unexpected and very disturbing source.

He quickly has to invent a pretext to cover the real reason for his presence in this town. He is pursued wherever he goes by a sleazy individual called Luigi Bonifaccio who, Luca learns, is supposedly the son of the powerful fattucchiera – the sorceress – of the town.A foolhardy act of charity involving a young Moroccan women. trapped in the town by Luigi Bonifaccio, triggers events which have immediate consequences for Luca’s own safety. Puglia with the Gloves Off Part One – Salento

Never been to Puglia? Thinking of visiting this part of Italy – perhaps not for the first time? I lived there for nine years from 2001 until 2009. Now I am regretting that I ever came back to the barely United Kingdom. I miss the warmth, the food, the idiosyncratic ways of its people, their unfailing hospitality, the deviousness of the market-stall holders, the smells, the sound and sight of people of all ages united on their local town square joining in their traditional dance – the Pizzica – whose rhythms will haunt me until the day I die. Not to mention the fresh fruit and vegetables and the abundance of healthy dishes which almost guarantee longevity, if not eternal life.
My nine life-changing years entitle me to tell you the way it is in this far-flung region of Italy. All will be revealed. Nothing will be concealed. This will be Puglia with the Gloves Off.
